Renault team boss Cyril Abiteboul confirmed that they were interested in Stoffel Vandoorne for 2019 and beyond.
Vandoorne, who came to F1 with great hopes after the successes he had caught in the bottom line, could not perform well enough to meet expectations in the last 1.5 years.
Despite being seen as a talented pilot, the inability to stand up against Fernando Alonso makes him suspect of his Belgian driver's ability.
McLaren continues to support the 26-year-old pilot, and Toto Wolff says Vandoorne is a very talented driver.
Vandoorne, however, appears to be idle if he leaves McLaren because Renault confirms that Cyril Abiteboul is interested in him.
"I do not want my words to be misunderstood, nor do I say that Stoffel will come to Renault because there is no such thing, but it is one of the drivers we observe."
"When I ask the possible options we have, I think that one of these options is Vandorne."
"I know it's extremely difficult now, but sometimes a pilot can get a fresh air by changing the environment and get better."
"What you need is for me to do this, he has already demonstrated a very fast pilot and his ability has been stable in all categories and there is no reason not to do it all again."
"If you have Fernando on your side, it makes it harder to win the championship twice and it's hard for you to show yourself while you're there, and it's not easy if you're in McLaren."
"It's a little difficult for everyone, but it's one of the high-level drivers we can think of for our future."
