Sergio Perez said that Force India had taken a good step before the first race of the season, but the team was not the best midrange at the moment.
Force India is participating with a simple version of the test cars 2018 and is preparing to go with a major update to the Australian GP, the first race of the season.
This decision, which finished the 4th place in the past year, left behind the main competitors in the pre-season tests.
Perez is hopeful that the team will have the best of the mid-season, and the Melbourne updates and seasonal improvements will bring the team to last season.
Speaking on the first day of the second test, Perez said, "We must take a good step for the first race and I hope we can be competitive after we take this step." said.
"It's hard to know where we are right now, but it looks like we're not the best of the middle, but as I always said, it does not matter where we started, it's important where we are in Abu Dhabi."
"We will use it in Melbourne to see where we are with the package, but we are very hopeful about it. It's too early to be disappointed or happy, so we should look ahead and continue to work."
The Mexican, admitting that they could only complete one part of the program, said they were satisfied with the progress they had made.
Perez: "We were able to finish only a part of the program and had a positive day, we learned a lot and got the data, and it was nice, I have one more day before Melbourne and now I feel better."
